SPF timing note: April and May are peak months for SPF searches in Ireland — up 34% from September. If you don’t have a daily SPF in your routine yet, now is the time. My recommendation is the LRP Anthelios UVMune 400 range. More below.

I’ve recommended La Roche-Posay to patients for over a decade, and I’ve used the products on my own skin — for acne in my twenties, eczema flare-ups, and a fragrance sensitivity that ruled out most alternatives. This guide covers every range, every skin concern, and the clinical reasoning behind each recommendation. — Aidan Kelly, Chemco Pharmacist, PSI Reg. 7890

Why I trust La Roche-Posay above other brands

La Roche-Posay is formulated around thermal spring water from the town of La Roche-Posay in France. That water has a naturally high selenium content and a unique mineral composition that calms reactive and sensitive skin. It sounds like marketing until you see it work on a patient who has failed every other moisturiser.

What separates LRP from most pharmacy skincare is how it is developed. Every formulation is tested on sensitive and compromised skin — not just normal skin. Dermatologists are involved at the formulation stage, not brought in to endorse a finished product. Ingredient lists are deliberately short. Fragrance is minimised or eliminated. The focus is always clinical tolerability and efficacy, which is exactly what matters when a pharmacist is making a recommendation to a patient with a real skin condition.

I completed La Roche-Posay brand training across all five core ranges and work with these products daily — in Chemco branches, and in wound care and skin management protocols in nursing homes across Ireland. The clinical evidence is consistent across every patient population I treat.

Anthelios — the SPF range I recommend to every patient

SPF is the most evidence-backed anti-ageing and skin health intervention available without prescription. If I could only recommend one skincare product to every patient, it would be a daily SPF50. Anthelios is what I personally use and what I recommend most often.

The current Anthelios range is built around the UVMune 400 filter — a newer UV filter that blocks a significantly broader range of UVA radiation than older formulas, including the very long UVA wavelengths most associated with photoageing and pigmentation. If your current SPF is more than three years old, the UVMune 400 is a meaningful upgrade.

LRP Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+

Lightweight, non-greasy finish. My first recommendation for normal, combination and dry skin. Works as a makeup base. The formula I use myself every morning.

Normal · Dry · Combination · Daily use

LRP Anthelios UVMune 400 Oil Control Fluid SPF50+

Mattifying formula for oily and acne-prone skin. Controls shine without clogging pores. The SPF that pairs with the Effaclar morning routine.

Oily · Acne-prone · Combination

LRP Anthelios UVMune 400 Tinted Fluid SPF50+

Light tint that evens skin tone while providing SPF50+ protection. My recommendation for rosacea patients — it reduces visible redness while the SPF prevents sun-triggered flares. Two essentials in one product.

Rosacea · Visible redness · Uneven tone

LRP Anthelios UVMune 400 Hydrating Cream SPF50+

Rich cream formula for very dry or sensitive skin. Ceramide-based hydration alongside SPF50+ protection. For patients who find standard SPFs feel drying or tight.

Dry · Very dry · Sensitive

Sun exposure is a primary rosacea trigger, a major driver of hyperpigmentation, and the single largest contributor to visible skin ageing. Whatever else you do in your skincare routine, the SPF is non-negotiable. Every morning, all year round, including winter.

Cicaplast — the most versatile product in the range

Cicaplast Baume B5 is the product I reach for first across more clinical situations than any other in the LRP range. I have recommended it for nappy rash in infants, post-laser recovery in adults, eczema flares, rosacea skin after a reaction, wind-burned skin, chapped lips, and as a barrier repair product in nursing home wound care protocols. The formula is the same in every case — because skin barrier repair works the same way regardless of the cause.

The active ingredients are vitamin B5 (panthenol) at 5%, which draws moisture into the skin and supports its natural regeneration, and madecassoside, derived from centella asiatica, which has anti-inflammatory and skin-repair properties. The Tribioma Prebiotic Complex helps restore the skin microbiome, which plays a significant role in barrier function and immune response.

LRP Cicaplast Baume B5 40ml

The essential Cicaplast. Use on the face for rosacea flares, post-retinol irritation, wind damage or any barrier disruption. Safe from birth. The product I recommend most universally across every patient type I treat.

All ages · Face · Targeted treatment · Post-procedure

LRP Cicaplast Baume B5+ 100ml

Larger format for whole-body use and chronic dry or eczema-prone skin. Better value for daily ongoing use. Identical formula to the 40ml — the size is the difference.

Body use · Eczema · Chronic dry skin · Daily repair

I use Cicaplast Baume B5 in wound care and skin barrier protocols for elderly residents in nursing homes across Ireland. It is the same product I recommend to parents for nappy rash. When the skin barrier is broken, the clinical mechanism — B5 and madecassoside repairing the barrier and reducing inflammation — works regardless of what caused the damage or who the patient is.

Effaclar — the acne range

Effaclar is the LRP range I build acne routines around for both teenagers and adults. The science is built on two key ingredients: LHA (lipo-hydroxy acid), a BHA derivative that exfoliates inside the pore rather than on the surface, and niacinamide, which reduces the inflammatory response that turns a blocked pore into an active blemish.

The most important thing I tell every acne patient: consistency for six weeks. Acne treatments take time. The skin purges, adjusts, then responds. Most patients who say a product did not work stopped within three weeks. The clinical evidence for Effaclar requires four to six weeks of consistent use to show meaningful improvement.

LRP Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel 400ml

Step one of the Effaclar routine. Removes excess sebum without stripping. The large 400ml format makes it practical for daily morning and evening use. Start here before introducing any treatment.

Oily skin · Acne-prone · Step 1: cleanse

LRP Effaclar Duo+ 40ml

The treatment step. LHA inside the pore, niacinamide at 5.5% reducing redness and inflammation. My most recommended acne product. Apply to the full face after cleansing — not as a spot treatment. Allow six weeks consistently.

Active acne · Blackheads · Oily skin · Step 2: treat

LRP Effaclar Mat 40ml

Oil-control moisturiser that contains LHA to prevent congestion reforming throughout the day. Matte finish without drying. The moisturiser step for the Effaclar routine.

Oily skin · Combination · Step 3: moisturise

LRP Effaclar H Iso-Biome Cream 40ml

For skin sensitised by acne treatments — retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, repeated use of actives. When a patient’s skin becomes dry, flaky or reactive from their acne treatment, I switch them to Effaclar H. It repairs the barrier while the treatment continues.

Sensitised by treatment · Dry acne-prone skin · On Roaccutane

Toleriane — sensitive and reactive skin

Toleriane is the range I reach for when a patient’s skin is reactive, hypersensitive or allergy-prone. The entire range is built around minimalism — every unnecessary ingredient removed so that even the most sensitive skin can tolerate the formula. No fragrance, no alcohol, no parabens, no preservatives in many products. That is a deliberate formulation choice, not a marketing claim.

Toleriane has been one of the fastest-growing LRP search clusters this year in Ireland — up 240% year-on-year. Patients are arriving with specific product names after dermatologist referrals, which tells me the clinical community is recommending Toleriane more than ever.

LRP Toleriane Sensitive Cream 40ml

My entry recommendation for sensitive skin. Prebiotic formula with LRP thermal spring water. For patients who describe their skin as sensitive but have not yet had a reaction to standard moisturisers. Gentle enough for rosacea-prone skin as a daily moisturiser.

Sensitive · Reactive · Rosacea · Daily moisturiser

LRP Toleriane Dermallergo Cream 40ml

For genuinely hypersensitive or allergic skin. When every other moisturiser stings, this is where I start. The most minimal ingredient list in the range. Contains Neuro-Sensine, which specifically addresses neurogenic skin hypersensitivity. I recommend this for community patients and for fragile elderly skin in nursing home residents equally.

Allergic skin · Maximum sensitivity · Post-procedure · Geriatric skin

LRP Toleriane Rosaliac AR Day Cream SPF30

The only facial SPF I know of specifically developed for rosacea. Anti-redness actives combined with SPF30 — addressing two of the most important rosacea management steps in one product. Sun exposure is a primary rosacea trigger. This product deals with the cause and the visible redness simultaneously.

Rosacea · Visible redness · Sensitive · Daily SPF

Serums and anti-ageing

The LRP serum range has grown significantly this year. The Retinol B3 Serum is up 189% year-on-year in Irish searches, which reflects a broader shift: patients are increasingly informed about active ingredients and are seeking specific formulas rather than general anti-ageing creams.

The principle I explain to every patient starting serums: one active at a time, introduce slowly, and SPF every morning without exception. Retinol and vitamin C both increase photosensitivity. Without daily SPF, you are partially undoing the benefit of the serum.

LRP Retinol B3 Serum 30ml

A buffered retinol that is better tolerated on sensitive skin than most retinol products. The niacinamide (B3) component offsets the irritation that retinol can cause. Start at 3 nights per week, build to nightly over 4 to 6 weeks. Always pair with Anthelios SPF50 in the morning.

Anti-ageing · Wrinkles · Skin texture · Sensitive to retinol

LRP Mela B3 Dark Spot Serum 30ml

One of the most advanced pigmentation serums available without prescription. Niacinamide at clinical concentration combined with tranexamic acid — previously used only in prescription treatments — targets both active pigmentation and post-inflammatory marks from acne. Pair with Anthelios SPF50 every morning. Allow 8 to 12 weeks for full effect.

Dark spots · Post-acne marks · Sun spots · Melasma support

LRP Hyalu B5 Serum 30ml

Multi-weight hyaluronic acid that hydrates at different depths of the skin simultaneously. Vitamin B5 supports barrier function. Hyaluronic acid is the most-searched skincare ingredient in Ireland — this is the clinical-grade version. Suitable for all skin types under moisturiser.

All skin types · Dehydration · Plumping · Under moisturiser

LRP Pure Vitamin C12 Anti-Wrinkle Serum 30ml

Stable ascorbic acid at 12% — a concentration that delivers clinical benefit without the rapid oxidation that affects many vitamin C serums. Use in the morning before SPF. Vitamin C and SPF together is one of the strongest evidence-based combinations for photoprotection and collagen support.

Anti-ageing · Brightening · Collagen support · Morning use

Lipikar — eczema and very dry skin

Lipikar is the LRP range for eczema, atopic dermatitis and very dry skin. The formulation challenge with eczema-prone skin is that it involves two simultaneous problems: an impaired barrier that lets irritants and allergens in, and a microbiome imbalance that disrupts the skin’s immune response. Lipikar Baume AP+M addresses both.

I use this product in care home skin management protocols for elderly residents with xerotic skin. The AP+ formula contains Aqua Posae Filiformis, which specifically targets the microbiome imbalance associated with eczema. Combined with shea butter and niacinamide, it repairs the barrier and soothes inflammation. The 400ml format is designed for full-body daily use.

LRP Lipikar Baume AP+M 400ml

My first recommendation for eczema, atopic dermatitis and very dry body skin. Apply daily after bathing to damp skin. Use consistently — not only during flares. Patients who use this as a daily preventive moisturiser have fewer and less severe flares in my clinical experience.

Eczema · Atopic skin · Very dry skin · Children · Elderly skin

The most common eczema management mistake I see is treating only during flares and stopping when the skin clears. Eczema is a chronic barrier condition, not an acute episode. The barrier needs daily maintenance even when the skin looks normal. Lipikar Baume AP+M used consistently every day — not just when flaring — changes the long-term pattern for most patients.

Frequently asked questions

Which La Roche-Posay product should I start with?

Start with the range built for your concern: Effaclar for acne, Cicaplast for barrier repair, Toleriane for reactive or rosacea-prone skin, Lipikar for eczema. If you want one product that works across the most situations, Cicaplast Baume B5 is what I recommend most universally.

Is La Roche-Posay good for eczema?

Yes. The Lipikar range is specifically designed for eczema and atopic-prone skin. The AP+ formula in Lipikar Baume addresses the microbiome imbalance that underlies atopic dermatitis. Cicaplast Baume B5 is also effective for eczema flares on the face and for children’s skin. The key is consistent daily use — not just treatment during flares.

Can I use La Roche-Posay on my baby?

Yes. Cicaplast Baume B5 is safe from birth and allergy-tested on baby skin. I recommend it for nappy rash, dribble rash and baby eczema. Fragrance-free, paraben-free, tested on infant skin. For ongoing dry skin in babies, Lipikar Baume AP+M is also suitable for children.

Which La Roche-Posay is best for rosacea in Ireland?

The Toleriane Rosaliac AR range is specifically developed for rosacea. I recommend starting with the Rosaliac AR Day Cream SPF30 as your morning product — it combines anti-redness actives with sun protection. In the evening, Toleriane Sensitive Cream or Toleriane Dermallergo for very reactive skin. Avoid fragrance, alcohol and strong actives, which trigger rosacea flares.

Can I use La Roche-Posay while on Roaccutane?

Yes, and it is what I specifically recommend. Cicaplast Baume B5 for lips is essential — isotretinoin causes severe lip dryness and Cicaplast is one of the most effective lip balms I have found. Toleriane Dermallergo for facial moisturising, Lipikar Baume for body. Anthelios SPF50 daily without exception. Avoid all active ingredients while on Roaccutane.

Is the La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum suitable for sensitive skin?

It is more tolerated than most retinol products because niacinamide (B3) helps offset the irritation retinol can cause. Start at 2 to 3 nights per week on dry skin, moisturise after. If irritation occurs, apply Cicaplast Baume B5 on top. If you have rosacea-prone or very reactive skin, speak to a pharmacist before starting — retinol may not be appropriate for your skin type.
