Corsodyl Dental Gel 50g — Chlorhexidine Digluconate 1% for Gum Disease & Mouth Infections
Corsodyl Dental Gel contains chlorhexidine digluconate 1% — a clinically proven antibacterial agent used to treat gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis), mouth ulcers, denture sore spots and other oral infections. Corsodyl is the most widely recommended chlorhexidine dental product in Ireland and the UK, used extensively in clinical dental practice and frequently recommended by dentists after procedures.
The gel formulation allows precise, targeted application directly to the gum margin, ulcer or affected area — making it more effective for localised treatment than a mouthwash used for general rinsing.
What Corsodyl Dental Gel Treats
- Gingivitis (early gum disease) — inflammation, bleeding and soreness of the gums
- Mouth ulcers — provides antibacterial protection to prevent secondary infection
- Denture-related soreness — treats infected or sore areas caused by denture irritation
- Post-extraction care — supports healing after tooth extraction
- Oral infections — localised bacterial infections of the gum tissue

- Chlorhexidine digluconate 1% — clinically proven antibacterial
- Gel formulation — targeted application to gums and ulcers
- 50g tube — sufficient for a complete treatment course
- Mint flavour — acceptable taste for regular use
- Available without prescription from Chemco Pharmacy
How to Use
Apply a small amount of gel directly to the affected area of the gum or mouth using a fingertip, soft toothbrush or cotton bud. Use twice daily after meals and after brushing. Do not swallow. Continue use for the duration of the recommended treatment course — typically 1 month for gingivitis. For use longer than 1 month, seek dental advice. Note: long-term use can cause temporary tooth and tongue staining — this is reversible with professional cleaning.
For oral use only — do not swallow. Not suitable for children under 12 without dental advice. Long-term use may cause tooth staining. Always read the patient information leaflet before use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Corsodyl Dental Gel stain my teeth?
Chlorhexidine can cause a brownish-yellow staining of the teeth and tongue with prolonged use — this is a well-known and common side effect. The staining is extrinsic (on the surface) rather than intrinsic and can be professionally removed by a dental hygienist. It tends to be more noticeable in coffee and tea drinkers. To minimise staining, avoid tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco for 30 minutes after application. The staining is reversible with dental cleaning and is not harmful. Corsodyl is recommended for short-term use (typically up to 1 month) — long-term ongoing use is not recommended without professional supervision.
What is the difference between Corsodyl Dental Gel and Corsodyl Mouthwash?
Both contain chlorhexidine as the active ingredient but at different concentrations and for different applications. The gel (1% chlorhexidine) is designed for targeted localised treatment of specific areas — gum margins, ulcers and post-extraction sites — where precise application is needed. The mouthwash (0.2% chlorhexidine) is used for general antiseptic rinsing of the entire mouth. For localised gum disease or ulcers, the gel provides more concentrated antibacterial action exactly where it is needed.
